Short Story: Weekend Warriors

Hello and welcome to a brand new week. Who remembers The Frame Up? The 3 part short story series that had you all itching with suspense for weeks?

Yeah, I miss it too. But that story has been concluded. There’s no rule however that says you can’t get another one, split into three parts, with as much intrigue, danger, and fun.

So, guys, I give you,

WEEKEND WARRIORS

He was a special kind of nerd. Cool, confident and hilarious. In fact, he didn’t look like a nerd or talk like a nerd. He wasn’t as socially inept as most nerds were.

There was literally nothing at first glance to suggest that the 23-year-old alumnus of University of Lagos walked around with an IQ of 165. Which was why he made the perfect secret agent.

Harry Jones was a fresh undergraduate seeking a job by day, and a lethal agent and a rising star of the field-ops department of the D.I.A.

He gazed now at the robbers who’d approached him and his friends, whilst returning from the cinema having gone to see the popular movie Black Panther.

“Una no dey hear!” One of the thugs bellowed.

Mimi, Harry’s timid and pretty friend shuddered and inched closer to him.

Bros abeg na free us. See we no get anything for hand. Na ordinary students we be,” Tonye said. He was a tall, broad-shouldered and chatty young man.

Beside him stood Halima, his ever sassy and fearless love interest.

“You sure say na real gun self dem dey hold?” She voiced aloud.

Catherine kicked her hard. “Shut up,” she ordered. Catherine was the voice of reason and also Harry’s girlfriend.

Harry watched with impatience as Catherine fished out some cash and jewels from her purse. He looked at the three thugs and back at his friends.

Years of training told him the thugs wouldn’t let them go that easily. And he needed to go. A mission was already in motion and its success solely depended on him.

“Enough!” Harry yelled. His friends stared at him in alarm.

“Walk away and I promise I won’t kill you,” He ordered.

Tonye slumps in disbelief. Mimi shrieks. Catherine gapes. Haleemah stares at Catherine, her lips pursed.

“It’s official. We’re gonna die,” she said dryly.

The three thugs laughed in unison. That was all Harry needed.

He charged, whirled and parried to the side. Harry let out a scissor kick that hit one of them square in the face and had him growling in pain. He ducked and slid forward on his knees. In a quick motion to get up, he loosens his feet and hauls himself up in a back flip. The second thug got a kick in the jaw and lost a tooth due to that move.

On his feet, Harry grabs him by the arm and punches him in the gut. He drives his knee into his groin and twists his shoulder backward. A quick jab of his fingers to the thug’s neck had him knocked out, using an ancient Chinese technique to put the criminal to sleep.

The last of the thugs stood aghast and shaken. Harry spared a look at his friends. Tonye was still unconscious. Mimi was gaping. Catherine looked pissed and Haleemah looked as revved and excited as a cheerleader would at a basketball game.

He fished in his pocket and threw out a small rectangle box that looked like a pack of gum.

“Guys,” He said to his friends.” Close your eyes!” They did. Tonye wakes up. Boom. A soundless explosion. A blast of light. Flash bang. Tonye’s eyes rolls in its sockets and he faints again. The menacing glare of light incapacitates the last thug and Harry attacks.

In three seconds he had him knocked out and his gun out of his hands.

His friends stare at him in awe except for Tonye who was still napping.

“Did I just do that?” He asked aloud.

“Yeah you did, and it was so cool!” Haleemah exclaimed.

“Catherine I-”

Harry was cut short as he grogilly slumped to the ground, a dart in his neck.

“Oh no,” Mimi gasped.

Haleemah rolled her eyes. ” Would you believe?” She asked rhetorically.” My life’s a movie.”

In a flash, they were also shot with sleeping darts and slid to the ground as well.

Tonye opens his eyes, confused.

He is shot with a sleeping dart in his neck and slumps back to sleep.

Their assailants step out of the shadows, three built and uniformed men in suits.

They were secret service agents.
