2nd division Holstein Kiel knocks out champions Bayern Munich

What should have been an easy fixture for world club powerhouse Bayern Munich turned into an upset as second division club Holstein Kiel knocked the Champions League champions out of the DFB cup.

The DFB Cup titleholders Bayen Munich scored in the 14th minute via a Serge Gnabry strike. If Bayern Munich fans had expected a rout they couldn’t be more disappointed when Bartels levelled for Holstein Kiel before the end of the first half.

As expected, Bayern Munich got to an explosive start from the start of the second half. Leroy Sane restored the lead three minutes into the second period.

While enjoying the lion share of possession, Bayern Munich failed to capitalize on their chances to increase the lead. Lewandoski and Douglas Costa came on to keep the underdogs under more pressure.

Despite facing lots of shots and being a goal down, Holstein Kiel did not back down. Their resilience was rewarded when with what should have been the last play of the game; Hauke Wahl headed the 2nd Division team back on level terms.

The draw took the game into extra time and finally to a penalty shootout. Both teams scored all the penalties in their first round of fives.

Then, Marc Roca (who had replaced Gnabry in the 90th minute) lost his penalty. It was only fitting that Fin Bartels, who scored the first Holstein Kiel goal of the night against Bayern Munich, also close their impressive performance with a spot-kick that sent Neuer the wrong way.

The celebrations were wild and they should be.

Bayern Munich has won the DFB Cup 20 times and has won it back-to-back in 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 seasons. To Holstein Kiel, they have done the impossible to eliminate Bayern Munich and they did it in entertaining fashion as well.
