Atalanta humbled Serie A leaders AC Milan 3-0 on Saturday handing them their second league defeat of the season at San Siro, however, Stefano Pioli’s side emerged as ‘winter champions’ in Serie A.
Cristian Romero, Josip Ilicic, and Duvan Zapata all scored in a very dominant victory for the Bergamo side.
Atalanta could have easily beaten AC Milan by an even wider margin if they had converted a myriad of chances they got as Milan looked pretty much out of sorts and ultimately put in one of their worst performances of the season.
The hosts also failed to manage a shot on target until the 71st minute of the match when debutant Mario Mandzukic drew a good save from Pierluigi Gollini with his first touch after coming off the bench.
Milan nevertheless claims the title of winter champions having remained top of the Serie A at the halfway point of the season with 43 points, two ahead of Inter Milan after their 0-0 draw at Udinese.
Atalanta also moved into the top four with the comfortable win which got them up to 36 points, returning to form in style after back-to-back draws against Genoa and Udinese.
Udinese 0-0 Inter Milan: Antonio Conte sent off in drab draw
Inter Milan missed out on the opportunity to top the Serie A after playing out a 0-0 draw at strugglers Udinese on Saturday, a match which saw Inter’s coach Antonio Conte sent off.
The visitors traveled to Udinese on a high having managed to beat title rivals Juventus 2-0 last weekend, however, they found it very daunting breaking down the determined hosts, who became the first team to keep a clean sheet against Inter in Serie A this season.
Lautaro Martinez came the closest to scoring in the match but his first-half shot drew a spectacular one-handed save from Juan Musso.
Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte was also dismissed for dissent in stoppage time.
Conte’s side remain second on 41 points, two behind AC Milan at the halfway stage of the season, while Udinese are 14th on 18 points but without a win in nine games.
