Stylised as Æthelflæd, Aethelflaed is also popularly called Lady of the Mercians. She had ruled Mercia in the English Midlands from 911 until her death. Princess Aethelflaed is the eldest daughter of Alfred the Great, king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex, and his wife Ealhswith.
According to her Wikipedia page, she was born during the period when the Vikings were invading England. When she was a child, the Danish Vikings ruled most of England but her father, Alfred, won a decisive battle, the Battle of Edington, which led to English kingdoms gaining some control of the western half of Mercia.
Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians, accepted Alfred’s overlordship and the former adopted the title King of the English, claiming to rule all English people not living in areas under Viking control. In the mid-880s, Alfred sealed the strategic alliance between the surviving English kingdoms by marrying Æthelflæd to Æthelred.
