Badmouthing your former/current employer raises questions and doubts that wouldn’t be raised if you give the impression that you are on good terms with your former place of employment.
Your last job was terrible, but there’s also the possibility that you were the problem rather than the job. It’s hard for an interviewer to know which one of these it is, so it’s best not to put the question in their heads in the first place.
