Ex Leeds and Sheffield United player and Argentina national team coach, Alejandro Sabella has passed away after a brief illness aged 66.

Sabella joined Sheffield United from Rivers Plate after the club failed in their attempts to land compatriot Diego Maradona, and went on to make 76 appearances for the Blades between 1978 and 1980 before a move to Leeds United, which saw him turn out 23 times for the club.

He becomes the second Argentina football personality to pass away in just two weeks, following the death of another former Argentina player and manager, Diego Maradona on November 25.

The Argentine Football Association released a statement via Twitter, which read: “The family of the #LigaProfesional football @AFA deeply regrets the death of Alejandro Sabella, and accompanies all his loved ones in this sad moment.”

As a manager, he won the Copa Libertadores with Estudiantes in 2009 before becoming coach of the national team of Argentina in 2011, guiding them to the final of the Brazil 2014 World Cup where they lost to Germany.
