Karim Benzema was on target twice for the Los Blancos who eventually beat 10 men Athletic Bilbao 3-1 on Tuesday to move level on points at the top of La Liga table.

Athletic’s Raul Garcia got sent off early on after receiving two yellow cards for fouls on Toni Kroos, who put Real ahead with a first-time drive before the break.

Ander Capa brought the game back level for Athletic at the second attempt after he had a shot saved by Thibaut Courtois.

Benzema then took the reins and scored twice to win the game for Real, one from a header and the second was a fine strike during injury time.

Athletic substitute Mikel Vesga had a glorious chance to equalise in added time but was thwarted by an outstanding save from Thibaut Courtois before Benzema killed the game off by finishing on the counter-attack in the second minute of injury-time.

Real have now secured four wins in a row in all competitions as they continue to turn their season around.

Real Sociedad, Atletico Madrid, and Real Madrid are all on 26 points at the top of La Liga table.

Barcelona, who are nine points behind the trio, host Real Sociedad on Wednesday.
