The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge is the world’s longest sea bridge, it’s about 20 times the length of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.
The bridge spans the Pearl River Delta and goes underwater for 6.7km midway through the help of 2 artificial islands so that large cargo ship containers can pass above. The construction began in 2009 and was slated to be launched in 2016 but was delayed for another 2 years before it was commissioned on October 23, 2018.
The cost of constructing the bridge was $20bn (£15.3bn) and the lives of 9 workers. The bridge is built with blood pressure monitors and yawn cameras. Drivers across the bridge will have their heart rate and blood pressure monitored and the information sent to the control centre. The yawn cameras will monitor the driver’s alertness, if a driver yawns more than 3 times in 20 seconds, the yawn camera will raise an alert.
Travellers between Hong Kong and China would have to be pass through immigration border control as the countries have different legal and political systems.
China keeps finding new and nerve-racking ways to attract and entertain tourists, recently China launched the world’s highest waterfall.
