Nigeria’s longest-serving school principal, Rev Fr Jeremiah Dermot O’Connell, has passed away in his home country, the Republic of Ireland, where he had returned to, after his long sojourn in Nigeria.

He died in the early hours of Wednesday, 14th March 2018. He was aged 85 years old.

The late Fr O’Connell was the longest serving school principal in Niger State and Nigeria prior to his retirement and subsequent return to Ireland late last year.

He arrived Nigeria in 1967 as a missionary and first worked as a Catholic Priest in Calabar before he relocated to Niger State where he became the principal of Government Secondary School, Minna. At 84, Fr. O’Connell was still teaching.

May his soul rest in peace.
