It has now become common news that the former finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been recommended as the new Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

She secured the majority of the votes, earning support from member countries like Japan, China, and the EU.

However, there has been a problem with the selection process as the Trump administration in America has refused to back her appointment.

Because of this, the General Counsel has postponed the announcement of the new DG until 9 November, after the US Presidential elections.

Okonjo-Iweala has now taken to Twitter to express her thanks and stay positive about the selection process.

She wrote: “Happy for the success & continued progress of our @wto DG bid. Very humbled to be declared the candidate with the largest, broadest support among members & most likely to attract consensus. We move on to the next step on Nov 9, despite hiccups. We’re keeping the positivity going!”
